As you round the path from the smaller of the two Courtyard Gardens, notice to your right the tracery of a bamboo grove. This screens the view to the Grass Garden, which comprises three areas of closely-cropped grass bordered by smooth white sand. The outlines of the areas are those of a circle, a gourd, and a bean.

Not meant to be walked on, the grass areas can be considered singly, or treated as one large composition which is asymmetric but balanced. (The gourd shape in particular recalls the Japanese use of the gourd as a symbol of success and good luck.) The crisp edges of the grass areas rise slightly from the level of the surrounding bed of sand, which seems to meander among them like a stream flowing between rocks richly carpeted with moss. When the small crape myrtle and the plum tree to one side of the Grass Garden mature, their leaves will scatter upon the sand like blossoms floating away upon the water.
